Why You Should Treat Your Small Biz Like A Soulmate

Your business has a soul.

In Big Magic Liz Gilbert writes that creative ideas are spirits wanting to be brought into this world. They have chosen you to make this happen, and if you dither, they will move on to another creator.

This is also true for businesses. Whether you call it a spirit, a deva, or an entity, your business is alive thanks to you, and it has its own agenda.

How you relate to your creation will affect its success and your happiness.

Is your business an extension of you? Your "stuff" will be its "stuff". If you have boundaries issues, your business will let clients walk over it. If you don't value yourself, your business won't charge enough. If you struggle with accountability, your business deliverables will be inconsistent.

Is your business your child? Ask yourself what kind of a parent are you being? Are you a helicopter parent? Is your business a latchkey kid? Do you always think you know better? What are you feeding it? How are you educating it? Is it meeting its developmental milestones?

Is your business your partner? Do you REALLY listen to what it's telling you? Do you set mutual goals and chart a course together? Can you work out your conflicts? Do you ever spend quality time together, just the two of you?

For best results, treat it like a spouse, and always have each other's back.
