Are You a Coach or Consultant Who Resents Your Business for Not Generating Consistent Revenue? Here’s a Simple Perspective Shift That Will Help You Make Bank

A Zero Consult Month Is Not a Zero Income Month

You don’t get mad at your German Shepherd for not being a Dachshund.

You love it, play fetch, and feed it treats anyway. So why do we get mad at our businesses for not generating a consistent income, as if it were a salary?

Consultants and coaches have even worse “wrong dog-itis.”

We are selling our skills, experience, or expertise. It’s more personal than selling hot sauce or sweaters, so not booking sales is an ego blow. On the other hand, we get paid upfront and deliver the work over time.

Our business model is not a Dachshund and it’s OK.

I often find coaches say they’ve made “no money” in a month with no new sale. They resent their business for failing them. But sales often come in more like monsoons than the steady drip of an irrigation hose.

Here’s a helpful shift in perspective:

A $5000 coaching package for 24 sessions is actually EARNED over the course of 24 weeks. If you see it that way your mindset will be less feast or famine. Think of the $5K payment as water in a cistern, and you draw $208 of income from it each session.

A zero consult month is NOT a zero income month.

Consults can be erratic. You’re not selling toilet paper! What creates demand for your services is complex and it’s natural to have an ebb and flow.

Think of your income like drip irrigation each week, and you’ll have fewer feelings of scarcity in between sessions. No need to wallow in shitty self-doubting thoughts which undermine how you show up for your people, and create the result you don’t want, i.e. no consults.
