Need Help Setting Goals? Daruma To The Rescue!
When a prospect I hadn't seen in years said he thought of me every morning, I just about died. He clarified that he kept the Daruma doll I had given him in his closet, so he saw it every time he got dressed. Why market by giving out red papier-mâché figures?
Daruma, the founder of Zen Buddhism was my money management firm's namesake. He symbolizes what generates good long-term returns: focus, discipline and resiliency.
Daruma dolls are popular in Japan, especially at New Year's. Daruma has a red roly-poly body, and when you knock him down he bounces back up again. "7 times down, 8 times up" is the Zen koan most associated with him. Perfect for aiming to beat the market over time.
Darumas are associated with the good fortune that comes from sustained effort, be it financial, educational, or personal. They are used for setting big goals.
The ritual requires that you paint in one of his eyes when you declare your goal, and the other when you achieve it. It's a wonderful reminder to keep working towards your goal, especially if you leave your Daruma where you can see it every day, like in your closet(!).
Some goals like running a marathon, or passing tough exams take consistent effort over a long time. Daruma will keep an eye on your progress. Having your goal in 3-0 is a powerful reminder of your commitment to yourself. Get one!
