Julia Hoggett

March 26th, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of women being allowed to trade on the London Stock Exchange. It had been exclusively male for 170 years before that fateful day in 1973.

Time and again, members voted to exclude women from the trading floor for bizarre reasons (as reported in the Financial Times) ranging from “What if women used their female charms or short skirts to secure better prices?” to “What if they were physically incapable of jostling their way through a crowded trading floor?“

Today the CEO of the LSE is a woman, Julia Hoggett. Her take? “Change has come, but so much more is required.”
