3 Tips To Overcome Online Writer’s Block

Lurker, Know-it-all, and Imposter.

They’re all murderers. They kill all desire to write. No one wants to hear crickets, no one wants to be the know-it-all, and everyone feels like an imposter. I get it:

You don’t want to be ignored and you don’t want to be hated.

No one wants to be The Know-it-all.  But everyone wants to learn something, whether it’s world domination, how many pints of tears we cry in a lifetime, or how to make tofu. It’s OK to school us, just don’t be a superior jerk about it.  Humility is likable. Unfreeze that pen.

Everyone is afraid of being The Imposter. Once we run out of things to say about the thing we are 1000% expert in, we get writer’s block. We don’t want to be mocked for serving up a non-1000% expert opinion on some other topic.

Have you seen what’s on social media lately? You will be fine.

”Humaning” is hard. Even if just sharing your experience can help one person get through the day, that’s gold. Each one of us is a unique repository of experiences, genetics, culture, and luck. Your authority is found in your unique humanity. We want to hear from you.

Let’s move on to The Lurker, the patron saint of crickets. For every person who likes a social media post, there are three who don’t take action. We are lazy. We die without telling people we love them or that we’re sorry. Reaching out takes little effort, but staying silent will cost you. People whose stuff you love will get writer’s block and give up.

Engage once every 15 minutes you’re on social media. You’ll be making 4 people an hour not feel like they’re tweeting into the void of a cold, heartless universe.
